The Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) will provide strategic leadership for agency marketing, communications, public relations and oversee creative functions for both internal and external audiences of F&CS.

This includes strategic planning to ensure F&CS upholds brand standards, gains maximum public awareness and support for F&CS, and positions F&CS as the provider and employer of choice for clients, potential employees, funders, and potential donors.

The CMCO creates strategic partnerships, including cultivating and managing media relationships, to support communications and marketing needs in four main areas: Programs, CEO, Corporate, and Human Resources.

Functions includes managing: writing, editing and producing consistent branding and initiatives for key messages, strategies, newsletters, email communications, content creation, collateral material development, and copy writing for all agency communication needs. Oversees the strategy behind graphic design and visual storytelling.

The CMCO will develop and manage an effective, high performing team, and oversee the message and visual aspects for social media, traditional, digital, search engine, video/animation and content marketing and communications.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Provide leadership for marketing, communications, media relations, public relations and creative functions.


Develop proactive PR plan and editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all organization publications and digital assets. Implement emerging, digitally driven content marketing strategy and approach that positively impacts the agency’s brand.
Lead development of agency’s outward-facing messaging, positioning, and narrative.
Provide direction and supervision of graphic design and visual storytelling projects.
Plan strategic and oversee content creation efforts (i.e. customer success stories, infographics, blogs, vlogs and articles).
Drive and ensure a dynamic earned media, online and social media presence.
Ensure consistent communication of brand, agency messaging and image across all platforms and constituents.
Enhance F&CS visibility and create positive recognition of agency’s programs, positively influence the agency’s perception, and reinforce F&CS as an industry leader.


Support internal customers with interviews, events, speaking opportunities, messaging talk points, executive scripting, announcements, presentations, etc.
Manage the appearance of all organization print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures.
Oversee creation of collateral content and materials (see addendum)
Manage copywriting, design, photography, videography and other creative production.
Manage vendors, budget, distribution and communications platforms, such as corporate website, social media platforms, broadcasting, ad buys, and contracts.
Manage and oversee campaigns, keywords, ad sets and ads in Google Ads. Analyze and understand the performance of digital ads, adjusting based on performance.
Oversee building and optimizing digital marketing campaigns.
Create and manage Marcom strategies in Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Facebook Business Manager and LinkedIn Ad Manager.
Manage marketing requests/orders and other material for internal and external use (communications request portal).
Source raw content by researching external channels, as well as interviewing internal subject matter experts.
Manage and design WordPress (WP Bakery) websites.
Ensure a meaningful, dynamic website and social media presence.
Stay cutting edge with digitally driven content, marketing strategy and approach.
Ensure that online copy and infrastructure are always refreshed, changing, relevant and supportive of overall organizational goals.
Use multiple communication channels to maximize agency messaging.
Set and meet standards for online engagement. Create reports and use data to inform engagement strategies.
Seek new opportunities to expand influence and increase brand awareness via emerging social medial platforms.
Develop a weekly and monthly process for determining the editorial content for all communication platforms including website, social media, newsletter, etc.
Work collaboratively with CEO and program leadership to select and develop content to support editorial agenda.
Work with internal clients to boost messages based upon strategy and need.
Maximize website effectiveness through strategic keyword optimization
Serve as WordPress (WP Bakery) webmaster
Serve as media liaison and proactively cultivate media relations
Develop proactive strategies to secure media coverage.
Use information to create media pitches and generate coverage.
Respond in a timely and appropriate fashion to all requests.
Vet and manage logistics for interview requests.
Conduct research and prepare background materials, as needed, for interviews.
Provide handling scripting, talk-point development, and media training for staff. Serve as their trusted PR expert, advisor, and handler.
Prepare responses for media as the Organization’s Public Information Officer and Crisis Communication Officer.
Cultivate and proactively manage media relationships to maximize exposure.
Provide public relations and crisis communication management counsel to CEO, board of directors and leadership team.
Oversee the production, distribution and follow up of public service announcements, news releases, videos and other media communications.
Develop strategic internal partnerships to support communications and marketing needs in five main areas: CEO/Corporate, Programs, and Human Relations.

CEO/ Corporate:

Strategic, thought-leader partner for CEO
Provide communications services for the CEO
Assist in material production for Board meetings and professional presentations.
Serve as the organization’s Public Information Officer and Crisis Communication Officer
Develop promotional and marketing materials for F&CS Thrift Store
Assist CEO in preparation of awards, speeches and presentations.
Manage client and donor releases when involved in marketing of F&CS

Program Marketing:

Collaborate with program leadership to determine strategy and needs.
Research program-specific opportunities, target audiences and opportunities and provide recommendations to program leadership.
Provide counsel and expertise for marketing campaigns and other strategic communications for programs.
Oversee creation of collateral materials, promotional items, web copy, online messages and other items needed to boost program marketing
Promote and market agency’s programs by developing PR plan and editorial calendar.
Support programs with interviews, events, speaking opportunities, messaging talk points, executive scripting, announcements, presentations, etc. through multiple channels and mediums

Human Resources

Employee Communication, Engagement and retention. Work in collaboration with HR departments to evolve strategies (graphic, written and interactive) for an effective employee website/platform for sharing news and providing access to agency policies, forms and other employee resources is in place, maximized and maintained.
Prepares editorial agenda, writes content, designs and oversee monthly employee posts on Staff Connections.
Employment Marketing Maximize use of corporate website, social media platforms, strategic vendors to reach as many potential candidates as possible.
Provide strategic employment marketing material and support, including marketing campaigns, vendor utilization, specific strategies, etc.
Develop an effective high performing team and department

Staff performance

Acquire and develop high performing talent by recruiting and managing high caliber staff with diverse and complementary skills and experience.
Identify and intervene in performance gaps.
Develop an empowered team and rewarding work environment
Ensure effective multichannel departmental communication
Ensure that employee appreciation and recognition activities are in place.
Seek input from team for staff meeting agenda items, training needs and other items.
Be an active and visible coach and support team to accomplish objectives, outcomes, and goals.

Department performance

Source contractors and vendors to augment staff capacity when needed
Oversee annual work plan process for division including goals, objectives, KPI activities and timelines. Ensure goals are met. Monitor progress quarterly with written reports
Ensure department understanding of strategic direction to align each group. Ensure effective management of workflow processes, information, talent, and outcomes. Implement performance and process improvement measurement and work plan development and reporting.
Establish key performance indicators (KPI) to create performance measures for metrics-based management
Develop and manage self for success.
Prepare an annual written professional development plan by assessing required core and advanced competencies and specific skill sets needed.
Understand and develop advanced business and management skills.
Model essential behaviors for program staff.


Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, English or equivalent
Five to seven years’ experience in management of a marketing communications or public relations department including personnel supervision and project management. A minimum of five years’ experience in planning, writing, editing, and production of newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing literature, and other print publications and directories
Demonstrated experience and leadership in working for a fast-paced, multi-faceted organization, managing a comprehensive strategic communication, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals
Ability to operate as an effective strategic thinker
Proven results implementing marketing communications strategies and producing a variety of assets
Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media
Creative and thoughtful on how emerging technologies can be utilized
